Wildlife Rescue Centre
WE WILL BUILD WILDLIFE RECUE CENTRE
Back Ground
Rescuing protected wildlife without release plan is a short term strategy due to the lack of inadequate rehabilitation facility. In addition to that, each animal requires a unique method of handling. Wildlife rescue center holds the key to give rescued animal a second chance. This takes effort and synergy between all related parties, especially in Kalimantan.
In East Kalimantan, there is no wildlife rescue centre available. Meanwhile, the scope of work of Balai Konservasi Sumberdaya Alam (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) is extremely wide. Therefore, CAN is determined to support governmental program in rescuing protected and endangered, especially in East Kalimantan. This rescue centre will work in 2 provinces: East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan. CAN choses Berau district, which located right in the border of east and North Kalimantan. This prime location will make it easier to operate and cover both provinces. Berau district is strategically located where there are 250,000 HA of protected forest, which later could be the perfect location for post-rehabilitation wildlife release. This wildlife rescue center is named Long Sam because it is located on the Sam River which is a subsidiary of the Kelay River
Place
On the ground level, CAN is continuously collaborating with local communities to determine Long Sam location plan, an rea of 15 HA has been granted for operational. This 15 HA of land will be distributed as: 5 HA of socialization enclosures and species block, 5 HA of quarantine enclosures, and 5 HA for medical facility and basecamp.
Besides that, CAN has conducted an initial survey along with the local community to determine the future location of wildlife soft release. This area is allocated for semi-wild animals which are ready to live outside enclosure but still requires a full monitoring from the keepers and medical team. This soft-release area will cover up to 15 HA.
All of these locations fall under Other Use Area, and it requires up to 1 hour with boat to access. This is the only access to the location, therefore it will be more safe and secure for the animals.
SUPPORT
CAN is working hard on clearing the legalities from East Kalimantan BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency), which will be expected to be finalized in 6 months or late-2020.
On the ground level, CAN has been building good relationship and reputation with local communities in restoration efforts, therefore the CAN plan is expected to be received well and supported by them. In the future, wildlife rescue program will be integrated with BUMDes (village-owned business) in fulfilling the Long Sam needs of fruits and animal feed.
CAN is continuously communicating with conservation practitioner in order to prepare the Long Sam establishment. This is crucial to gain insights on program planning. CAN will also continue to maintain a good relationship with the local government, in order to prepare a long-term scheme for the Long Sam operational.
We need help
Long Sam wildlife rescue center is an organization initiated by people who care about the protection of wildlife in Kalimantan. Long Sam will be a place for shelter for wildlife that can later be released into the wild. Long Sam will be built with energy and financial support from volunteers who care about wildlife conservation. Here are some of the needs of volunteer team members:
- Volunteer Coordinator: In charge of the volunteer communication and technical plan
- Technical personnel for the construction of a wildlife rescue center facility
- Wildlife Rescue Center area survey, Soft release and release
- Fundraising and campaign
CAN cannot cover the costs of volunteer transportation but can cover accommodation costs during the stay.
